About BAMS

The Boston Area Mathematics Specialists (BAMS) group formed in 1967 when Dr. Marion Walter, an Assistant Professor at Harvard Graduate School of Education at the time, realized there was a need for professional development among educators involved with elementary mathematics instruction. In the past 50+ years, BAMS has grown from its original 20-25 members to 130 and counting participants. While the size of BAMS has evolved, its original purpose and mission have not: We still strive to provide a network for those who desire to receive professional development, collaborate with other math educators and evaluators, and evaluate current mathematical research and practices.
